The Feast of the St. Clair

Every Memorial Day weekend, since sometime in the 1980's, a local park is taken over with people and tents all representing Colonial times in our area.  It's a really neat event to attend and experience what it may have been like to live back then.

My mom made the granddaughters outfits to wear as they walked around this year.  (As visitors, it isn't necessary to dress-up though.)
Rich and my Dad talking to the surveyors.  Rich went back at the end of the weekend to help them tear down their tents and equipment.
The kids watching weaving on a special loom that I don't remember the name of-lol!

Little trouble-maker ;-)
Slightly bigger trouble-maker :-)
Morgan trying her hand at weaving.
A blacksmith doing his thing.
Blake thought these hats were pretty neat!
Pretty sure he said something about wearing a dead thing on his head when he's talked about this one-lol!
The kids all learning something...I didn't stick around to listen because I was freezing and found some sun out of the wind!
A potter who made some pretty cool stuff!
These guys were very talented and neat to listen to!
There was a small group of American Indians and Blake stopped for a picture by the tee pee
Some soldiers who had just been shooting and I missed getting a picture.

The kids also had the fun task of finding the tents that had a compass sign out front.  Each of those stops meant that there was a stamp to be put in a little book they were given.  Once they had 15 of the 20 stamps, they could go and get a special prize.  The girls received bracelets, while Blake got a pin.

Something else that was pretty neat was the food!  They sold food there that would have been more fitting of the period, like smoked turkey legs, sausage on rolls and stew on biscuits.  There was also a tent that sold old-fashioned root beer!  You could actually buy a neat glass bottle and get refills for a small fee throughout the event.

It was really neat to go back and experience The Feast of the St. Clair.  Even though the kid went with my parents last year, I hadn't been there since I was a kid and this was Rich's first time.  It's definitely something everyone in our area should go and experience at least once! :-)

Our Memorial Day 2013

I hope everyone has enjoyed their Memorial Day weekend!  We were busy, but made sure to make it to our town's parade and Memorial Day ceremony first thing in the morning.  Both are always a really nice way to remember those who served, and gave their lives, for our freedom.

The kids were all ready for the parade, but we had a few minutes before it started so we ran down to the swinging bridge to check it out.  (They've been on it countless times, but it never gets old!)

Our way of enjoying the parades in town...by riding in the fire truck!  Since the fire trucks are always last, we still get a chance to watch the parade before we have to take off and be in it.

This is some of what we saw.

After the parade and ceremony, we went to the greenhouse to get our plants and seeds to plant our garden!  We always try to get it in Memorial Day weekend, but were unable to until Monday due to the threat of frost each night.

After Rich rotortilled a couple times, we worked to put up the chicken wire.  (Boy did that bum out the chickens!  LOL!)  And then I spent the next few hour putting in 9 tomato plants, 6 peppers, a row of onions, about 14 cabbages, a handful of peas (for Blake), 54 potatoes, 2 sweet potatoes, 3 zucchini, several butternut squash, 2 rows of popcorn...
... and 3 rows of sweet corn in our other little garden.  We're also expecting some voluntary pumpkins to pop up in this garden since there were all sorts of seeds in it already.  I still need to plant the green beans as well, but we didn't have the cattle panel for them to grow on until tonight to know how much to plant.  I should be able to get them in within the next couple days.

Now for the watering, weeding and waiting until the veggies start coming!

I'm very thankful for a beautiful day and for the men and women who have served to give me the freedom to enjoy this Memorial Day (and every day!)  :-)

Cowboy Lasagna

I saw this recipe on Pinterest and it just looked too good not to try!  I only used 2 cups of mozzarella cheese and it still tasted great!

Best Friends

Not only do the kids really enjoy playing with the new kitten, as I shared in the last Wordless Wednesday post, but he is also Mattie's new best buddy!

Mattie has never found another little friend that will play with her until now.  She's tried to play with both cats and Bear.  None of them want to put up with a puppy.  Fortunately kittens think a lot like puppies and want to play too!  I think Mattie would play with him for hours if she could. I could watch them for hours.  They're just too cute together!

Morgan's 7th Birthday!

I think I say it every year...I can't believe how the time has flown!  Of course Morgan is always anxious for time to fly now.  She couldn't wait to be seven and can never wait for the next big, exciting event....I just want it all to slow down!

We had Morgan's birthday party last Friday with mostly family and a close friend's family.

I decorated Morgan's dry-erase board as a little surprise for her and she wanted a picture of it. :-)
Snickerdoodle Bars to go along with the ice cream cake Morgan requested this year for her birthday cake.  She also wanted a 'Ballet' birthday, so the little toothpicks say "Tutu Sweet!"
A few decorations I came up with and some fun ballet themed coloring/activity pages rolled up and tied with a bow for party favors. (I found all the free printables on Pinterest.)
Anxiously awaiting present opening time.  She received a lot of wonderful presents this year including several art/craft projects, clothes, a baseball mitt and a MegaBloks Barbie Mansion.
Seeing her cake for the first time.  It turned out to be a COLD night, but the ice cream cake is always a good treat no matter what the temperature is outside ;-)
Morgan spent the next morning writing her thank you's.  This is an example of what they look like...I just need to get ink for the printer now and get them printed off and sent! :-)  (I'm pretty sure I saw this idea in the FamilyFun magazine.)
Morgan's actual birthday was Monday.  She woke up to some more birthday wishes on her dry-erase board. :-)
I made her a breakfast of homemade birthday pancakes...she chose the color for the icing which didn't turn out to be the blue we expected ;-)
She's been learning time in school and was curious at exactly what time she would be turning seven, so we got out her baby book.  She studied that the rest of the morning until we left for school. ;-)  (By the way, the time was 6:02 PM.)
She somehow ended up with another HOT birthday like last year...88 degrees!  (It made it to 90 last year!)  With the average being 70 for this time of year, those temps are quite unexpected, so we needed some cool treats after school.
After much cleaning up (the popsicles melted all over...as you can see Blake had to change!), we spent some time reading a chapter mystery book we've been working on (Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew).  Then the kids colored aprons they were given a year ago, but didn't have the colored permanent markers.  Morgan happened to get some markers with one of her birthday presents, so they were finally able to decorate the aprons!
We then turned on a movie and painted fingernails.  Both were a special treat that we haven't done in a while.  (The weather has been too nice to be watching movies!)
Rich brought home Morgan's dinner request of pizza and then she opened the gift I set aside for her 'actual' birthday.  She received 6 chapter books, 2 picture books and her very own devotional!  She's been loving reading lately and couldn't have been happier to get the books...her favorite was the devotional :-)
Morgan had made many of the projects she had gotten for her birthday over the weekend, but we still had to try making the flowers out of the beads her aunt had given her.  Thankfully a storm was coming through and it cooled off enough that we could turn the toaster oven on to melt them.
Rich picked Morgan some lilacs from our bush for her birthday too...I didn't get a picture of her with them, but they matched her shirt perfectly!

Morgan also had a nice time at school for her birthday.  Morgan took in more Snickerdoodle Bars, just like what we had for her party, since she was going to be sharing her birthday with another girl at school.  (We didn't think they'd want two cupcakes).  Sounds like they went over well and she had a few extras to share with some other favorite teachers. She was literally all smiles while she told me about her day and hardly stopped smiling until bedtime. :-)

Wordless Wednesday: A New Kitten

We had raised two little tiger kittens from about three weeks of age last summer so the kids each had a kitten.  Well, one of the kittens was determined to end it's life after about six months...and it happened to be Blake's kitten.  He was heartbroken!   So this Friday a few kittens were dropped off at the vet clinic again (where we got the two last summer) and Rich's mom brought Blake this little one.  It may be about six weeks, so it's not quite eating 'hard' solid foods yet, but he is doing quite well and the kids love him! :-)

Two Ingredient Cookies

The picture is a bit deceiving for this recipe since I added in a few extra ingredients.  I have yet to try this recipe without adding more ingredients to it since I already know I like the extras.  I love how EASY and HEALTHY these are and they taste pretty good too!
Two Ingredients:
* 2 ripe bananas
* 1 cup quick oats

1. Mash bananas with potato masher and stir in quick oats.

2. Add any other desired ingredients.  (I like to put in a handful of chocolate chips, a handful of coconut and a dash of cinnamon.)  Be careful to not add too much or the cookies won't stick together.

3. Place dough on greased cookie sheets by heaping teaspoonfuls and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Yeilds about 12 to 16 cookies

Please visit the original post for these cookies at The Burlap Bag.
