When I posted about the Upwards Awards, I had forgotten I had these videos to share still! I promise this is the last Upwards post! ;-)
As part of the halftime break during the kids' last Upwards basketball game, they discussed the virtues the kids learned during their devotions at practice. They had one child from each team come and read the verse that went with each virtue. Morgan nervously read John 3:16 in front of all the friends and family of the four teams and one cheer team that was there! I was very proud of her!
I'm also proud of this little guy (and Morgan's ability to film him!) Blake came a long way in his ability to control the ball this year. :-) You'll have to tilt your head to watch this one. ;-)

Upwards Basketball & Cheerleading 2013
The kids are a little over half-way through their basketball & cheerleading season. Morgan played basketball last year, but liked the idea of cheer leading more this year and knowing her personality it was definitely a better fit. She has loved everything about it, from dressing up in a skirt each week to shouting out the cheers. She is all smiles the whole time.
Blake is also all smiles with playing basketball, but it's a different kind of smile. For some reason when Blake plays sports he just thinks it's funny the whole time! He'll be out with his team practicing dribbling while another teammate is guarding him just laughing like it's all a funny game. Watching him enjoying basketball in his own way just cracks us up! :-)
There are a couple other changes from last year as well. Last year there were eight Saturday games and they cut it down to six Saturday games this year with a break the Saturday of President's Day weekend. We're liking the shorter season as the time commitment isn't so overwhelming.
Another difference from last year is I was asked to read the devotions for Morgan's cheerleading team. That was kinda huge for me since I DON'T talk to groups, but I thought that maybe God was taking me in a new direction and I accepted. I prayed a lot the first couple weeks of practice for God to help me calm my nerves and I'm finally coming around to enjoying it and the interaction with the girls. It's been an eye-opener for me that I can do more than I give myself credit for...with God's help of course!
Yet another big difference from last year is we're actually meeting other parents. Last year all the parents sat spread out from one another and didn't interact, but this year it's been nice to meet some great new people! (I have to admit that last year I didn't interact as much either being a bit of a helper with the team I didn't have as much of a chance to talk to others.)
Beyond that the season has been going well! Of course I have some pictures to share of their first game day too! :-)

Morgan is Playing Basketball!
Morgan started playing basketball in a program that our church puts on for kids in the community called Upwards basketball. This is the first that she has ever played basketball since we don't actually have a basketball here at our house and has a lot to learn but, for now, she's just having fun!
These pictures are from her 1st game. She's had another game since and will play 6 more...plus have 6 more practices.
I was asked to be an assistant coach, so I try to help out at practices and every other game since the main coach has classes every other weekend. It's been interesting! I don't know/remember much about basketball, let alone know how to teach it to kids, so thankfully I'm not the main coach! LOL!
The kids do a great job for their ages. They're Kindergarten and 1st graders. While they're playing they put on a color band that matches with a kid from the other team (that is at a similar skill level) for them to guard. Right here they're lined up with the kids from the other team so they can see who'll they'll be guarding for that period.
Each game starts with a prayer and then they play six 6 minute periods. They don't worry too much about things like traveling and double dribbling right now, so the games can run a bit smoother.
Being that this is a Christian-based program, I'm hoping it's something Morgan enjoys and will want to continue. They even have devotions at practice, so they can learn more about God's love...I think that's pretty cool! ;-) If basketball doesn't end up being her thing, they also have cheerleading, so we'll wait and see how the next 6 weeks go and how she feels about doing it next year....I think it'll be fun if she and Blake will want to play together! :-)
